Cardiac MRI scan Leicester
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a type of scan that takes detailed pictures of the inside of your body. A cardiac MRI is a scan of your heart and blood vessels. It’s safe and painless.
Why you would have a cardiac MRI
A cardiac MRI scan is done using an MRI machine. The machine uses magnetic and radio waves to show detailed pictures of the inside of your heart. You may have a cardiac MRI to help look for:
-
Congenital heart disease (heart problems that you’re born with)
-
Heart muscle conditions, such as cardiomyopathy
-
Growths in your heart (heart or cardiac tumours)
-
Damage to your heart muscle if you've had a heart attack or been diagnosed with heart failure
-
Heart valve disease.
How to prepare for Cardiac MRI scan
-
Do not drink or eat anything that contains caffeine, including tea, coffee, chocolate and cola. Otherwise, you can eat and drink as normal.
-
Please do not smoke on the day of the scan. Our stop smoking service can help with this.
-
Do not use lotions or oil on your chest. This makes it difficult to attach ECG electrodes (sticky pads to monitor your heart rate). If your chest is hairy, you might want to shave it before your appointment. Otherwise, we will shave the area for you.
-
Please do not come to the hospital if you have flu-like symptoms, are being sick (vomiting) or have diarrhoea.
